What do you do
when she’s itching to get out?

Moaning and yearning to be released

She haunts your every inaction
Highlights your every worry

She’s always nagging
Pushing for greatness
Pulling for better

You love what she stands for
You hate that she’s separate

Why can’t she be me?
Why can’t I be her?
Why won’t she set me free?

But what if
she isn’t separate?

What if
She’s your soul
Your essence
Calling you home?

What if she’s your warrioress?
Inspiring you past inaction
Striking down your worry

What if she’s your passion’s fire?
Always reminding you of your greatness
Your divinity
Your strength
Shedding light on those hidden parts the you fear
But that make you beautifully imperfect

What if she is the Universe
the entire Universe
Seeping through your every pore

What if
by loving what she stands for
You’re loving who you are

What if
By hating her separation from you
You become aware of your separation
from your heart

What if she isn’t she at all
What if she
Is really you?

Through the Eyes of a Tarot Reader

Ever wonder what it’s like to see through the eyes of a tarot reader?

I tell all of my clients that one of my goals is to demystify energy work. It’s my belief that it becomes more approachable for you after I explain the “mechanics” behind what I do. Which is ultimately what I want to do for you: empower you to discover that you are everything you need to succeed.

While I can’t speak for every tarot reader – we’re about as diverse as they come – I can tell you about what it’s like for me to do a tarot reading for you.

Let me start from the beginning…

I’m at my office or reading space about 45 minutes before you arrive so I can prep the space, making it a safe haven for the reading. Once there, I’m looking for (and sensing) any spirits or energies that need to exit the premises.

As an energy worker of any kind, you need to have an internal dictionary of what different feelings, images, and sensations mean. It’s not always as easy as just ‘seeing’ what’s there (although it makes my life much easier when I can just see what I’m working with).

For instance, I may walk into a room and immediately feel intensely anxious, with every hair on my body standing straight up. I know this is either some stagnant negative energy that needs to be cleared or a very nervous spirit that doesn’t know what to make of me.

Just as likely, I may walk into a room and see “someone” wandering around, just as startled to see me as I am to see them.

Both scenarios are equally as likely in my life and in my work.

Once I know what I’m dealing with, I clear the space of everything that doesn’t need to be there. I get the best results from using some sort of clearing agent (such as sage or a purification spray) in combination with a singing bowl. The combination of the two loosens up and releases any energy that doesn’t serve my work (or you). It’s also going to raise the vibration of the room which makes communicating with your guides and angels infinitely easier for everyone involved.

Once the space is clear of negativity and non-essential spirits, I call in the big guns to protect the room for the duration of my day: Archangel Michael. I ask him to keep the space pure and prevent anything that doesn’t serve the highest good from approaching or entering the space.

Angels have always been more of a challenge for me to connect with than guides/spirits. They often times make my ears ring intensely before I can make out the message. I equate it to me being tuned into a different frequency. You know, when you’re switching radio stations (manually) and you know you’re getting close because you can kind of hear the voices of the station hosts? It’s kinda like that.

Next, I cleanse and prepare myself because, contrary to some belief, tarot readers are human too. We have bad days and life challenges. The key however is to clear ourselves of our personal struggles while we’re channeling for your reading. Depending on the size of crabby pants I have on for the day, this can take just a few seconds (life is good!) to ten minutes.

Once you come into the office, get comfy, and have a seat across from me, I call in your guides, angels, or anything else that serves your highest good that wants to talk with you.

There’s a very specific feeling that I wait for to know that I’m “half-in-half-out”.  In other words, the feeling that signifies that I’m half on their side (the guides and angels) and half with you. The best way to describe this feeling is to imagine half of your body is floating in water while the other half remains on land. My arms and hands will feel like they’re floating, but I’ll still feel my feet on the floor. My third eye opens, and I see various images or colors that serve as confirmation that the channel has been opened.

So for those of you that have had a reading with me, do you remember when I ask you to close your eyes and breath deeply while I call in the angels and guides? Then there’s a momentary silence before I tell you we can begin? That’s the moment I’m waiting for that “open-channel” feeling.

That’s when the fun begins. Your guides will show me how they want me to lay out the cards. It’s very much like seeing very faint pieces of white tissue paper where the cards need to be laid down. There’s been a couple of instances where guides have given me an image of the spread through my third eye as well.

As I lay down the cards, I start to see how the energy flows between them. That energy looks a lot like mini rivers flowing between the cards and is my first clue as to what kind of reading it’s going to be.

After all the cards are laid out, there’s usually one that stands out, either by looking physically different or by pulling my attention to it. People often ask me how something can “pull” my focus. I can’t tell you how (because I don’t know for sure), but I can tell you that I have very little control over where my eyeballs focus. I HAVE to look at it. It’s a very odd sensation, and hard to put into words.

From here, I get your messages in a variety of different ways. It all depends on how you need to hear and receive the information.

I may see it: Sometimes your guides and angels will show themselves to me for identification. When this happens, I don’t see them like I see you. They are set in the background, almost as if they are behind a translucent curtain. If they decide to speak to me directly, it’s like trying to hold a conversation underwater. Although that does get easier the longer I stay connected to them.

They may also show me aspects of their messages, such as a place, person, or object. To perceive these images feels like trying to focus on a memory of a dream.

I may feel it: As a reader, I have to accept the fact that feelings are not my own when I’m reading your cards. I have felt the emotions of a drug addict, the frustration of a physically disabled body, and the confusion of someone struggling to cope with mental illness. Although sometimes jarring to the senses, this helps me connect to you on a deeper level when I’m energetically put into your shoes.

The cards are just my starting point to your reading. They are my tour guide, if you will. They give me an energy to tap into, so that you’re guides and angels may better communicate with me whatever it is you need to hear.

And no two readings are the same, and messages are always being delivered to me in new ways. For the longest time I explained to my clients that I’m not a medium, and won’t be able to incorporate mediumship into a reading. Well, as many of you know, that had to go out the window. As my connection became stronger and encompassed more energy channels, different kinds of energies started to come through. So, while I still hold that mediumship isn’t my immediate forte, I do have the occasional relative on the other side happy to participate in my readings.

This is also the reason that I tell my clients before a reading that the only limiting factor I enforce is that whatever energy wants to participate in the session must be working for your highest good, and only your highest good.

After my last client of the day has left, I take time to sit in deep, bursting gratitude. I thank everyone and everything that had a role in making the day successful, and for working along side me in service. This may be one of my favorite parts, actually: feeling the support and love that is always with me and that’s always with you.

I love what I do. It’s so dynamic and always changing. I never know what my next reading is going to look (or feel like) and I learn just as much from my clients (you!) as they learn from my cards.

So, if you ask me what it’s like to see through my eyes, I’d tell you the answer is simple: I see you and I see them. And we are much closer to each other than you think.

Keep your eyes open in the coming weeks, I’ll be talking about my favorite readings that were chalk full of giggles, tears, and shocking moments. I can’t wait to share these with you!

Your Inspiration Overdose

March’s free mini-tarot readings are pouring in, and ladies and gents, it would appear that we all are in need of some inspiration and good juju.

I’ve wrote about this before, the tendency for my oracle cards (including my tarot decks) to show me not only what the person I’m reading needs, but also what a group of people are experiencing. I’ve had the honor of doing twenty mini-tarot readings since March 1st, and let me tell you, we could all use a pick-me up.

You’ll find that your sources of inspiration are fluid; the right teacher finds you at the perfect time, when you’re ready. It’s also my experience that the best of kind of inspiration out there is when we give gratitude to the people who’ve made a positive impact on our life. We are all connected, and spreading the love benefits everyone involved.

With that being said, I want to sing some praises for just a few of my favorite women, from all parts of the world (and in no particular order). They’re always spreading messages that lift me up and inspire me to honor myself and others.

Read through the whole list for an overdose of positivity, or use the links below to jump to the woman who is calling to you in this moment.

I hope you can find some joy and light in them as well. If you do, make sure you send some love back at them!

I can’t say enough about this fantastic human being. I’ve been reading her posts for over a year now, and she always gives me an inspirational kick in the booty. Not to mention I ADORE her writing style. She’s down-to-earth, open, and knows her stuff. She’s also very spunky, which is a breath of fresh air. I mean, she’s named her brand “Crazy Sexy”. Anyone who makes that kind of decision is stellar in my book.

I’ve also had the pleasure of interacting with her and her staff twice. The first time she gifted me with her oracle cards, “Crazy Sexy Love Notes”. The second time she included my website on one of her international calls, giving me some encouragement and tips on how I can better my business. She’s got a big heart and spreads the love, even though she’s under no obligation to do so. That’s my kinda woman.

And if ya’ll could’ve seen the happy dance I put on for both occasions, I may reach a new level of crazy in your heads.

For those who’ve never heard her name, she’s living with a rare cancer that she’s keeping in-check with a holistic, spunky lifestyle. She talks about her experiences (literally all of them, it’s so refreshing) and how she’s living in harmony with her cancer. She’s a self-proclaimed cancer thriver (not a cancer survivor). She has tons of information and shenanigans on her website about clean eating, how to nurture your soul, and how to infuse some pep into your life.

Her entire website is fabulous, but HERE is one of my favorite posts. It’s a perfect example of the inspirational butt kicking I referenced earlier.

If you’d rather listen to her, HERE is her speech at Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, appropriately titled “How to Live a Crazy Sexy Life”.

And, finally, a crazy sexy quote:

“There’s no need to wait for the bad things and bullshit to be over. Change now. Love now. Live now. Don’t wait for people to give you permission to live, because they won’t.”

This amazing woman is on this list for a couple of reasons. First, I admire how authentic she is. The very first post I read by Jenilee was bursting with raw emotion and openness. Not to mention came at a time that I had the same exact feelings, although she expressed them much more eloquently. I can’t get enough of people, such as Jenilee, who have the courage and strength to put their truth out there for all to see and do so with respect. I draw a lot of inspiration from people like that to lead my own life as authentically as possible (and to know it’s possible to live that way!).

This also extends to the PHENOMENAL work she does for the LGBTQ community and social awareness. I have massive amounts of respect for people that walk their talk and then take it a step further by being proactive in change. And not only does she use her platform for positive support, but she works with people 1×1 to help them realize how powerful they are.

Speaking of helping people 1×1, her work is exceptional. As a tarot reader and energy worker, it’s hard to surprise me. I usually know what to expect walking into a session. From the moment I reached out to her, I wasn’t sure how everything was going to play out (which of course had me even more intrigued). I’m fairly certain I even told her, “I’m not sure how you can help, but I know I have to work with you”.

The perfect session date got worked out, at which time she blew me away. I’ve had my fair share of energy treatments, but her session has been placed firmly in my #1-best-treatment spot. I could go on and on about the truly amazing shifts that took place after my session (including the birth of this website), but you can read it all HERE.

The kind of transformational energy she provided for me (and for others) can only come from someone who is exceptionally gifted and connected. Someone who has worked tremendously hard at bettering themselves and has committed completely to helping others do the same.

I whole-heartedly hope to be able to join the ranks of energy workers, like Jenilee, that add so much positivity and good juju into the world.

Here’s a couple of quotes from Jenilee:

“Their is no one person more special than another. Each one of us has an equal amount of unique specialness to embody as part of this very special Earth Tribe.”

“In every moment there’s a decision to see ourselves, our partner, and the world through the lens of love instead of fear.”

“I am a Warrioress today, tomorrow and yesterday. There will always be opportunities for growth and in this moment everything is perfect.”

And one of my personal favorites:

“I am dreaming of a world where women support each other in rising. Competition no longer exists because we know that we are stronger, prettier, smarter, more powerful together. We aren’t ashamed of each other or jealous of each other. We reflect each other’s light and share medicine for each other’s wounds. This extends beyond women to all human beings but hey we’ve got to start by looking in the mirror”

Megan Jayne Crabbe

(@bodyposipanda and

This woman! She makes my day. She’s part of the body positivity movement that is helping people accept their bodies, no matter the shape, size, or color. She’s always posting pictures of her truth (often before and afters) that bare it all. It’s amazing. I also LOVE that she takes the time to take care of her people, especially if trolls are commenting on her posts. She’s got the attitude and heart that I admire. It’s people like Megan that remind us that it’s beautiful to be human and that we should do our very best to embrace our flaws.

You’ll find that there’s loads of support on her Instagram page as well, which makes it an excellent place to stroll onto if you’re having a bummer of a day.

I also admire her ability to totally rock a “unicorn mane”. Seriously, it’s talent.

I first stumbled upon Megan when she posted a video of her having a dance party with herself, enjoying some “joyful jiggle”. I highly…HIGHLY…recommend taking the time to watch it today:

Jessie J

You likely know who I’m talking about here, singer/songwriter of the hits Price Tag and Domino.

I don’t want to say too much here, I’d rather her music speak for itself. This particular song ALWAYS makes me feel better. It speaks to exactly how I feel about the struggles and judgements we face in life, and how we need to strive to embrace our greatness. And for those of you wondering how the heck this is spiritual in anyway, I have a homework assignment for you: Have a dance party, with yourself, to this song. Let yourself go and take note of how you feel after. Then tell me about it!

THIS is also an exceptionally great one, speaking more to the pressures we put on ourselves and how we need to rise above it all.

Harness the Power of Animal Medicine

In January, I gave many of you a 2017 outlook spread: one power animal for each month.

I’ve received a lot of questions about how to decipher meanings and how to apply them to your life. Now that we’re in March, I’d like to take some time to talk about how to use those animals and their “medicine” to better your life.

Let me start with an example:

My February animal medicine was the Turkey: Give-Away

Turkey is simultaneously both an indication of gifts headed your way and a reminder that all energy, and abundance, should move through you. Translation? Get ready for some exceptional gifts, but don’t get greedy. Be generous as generosity comes to you and reign in any fears of lack.

Naturally, there was some excitement when I looked into this medicine at the beginning of the month. Gifts?! From Spirit?! Yes please! Gimme gimme!

And there was my very first lesson, on February 1st: don’t get greedy! I had to get to work right away on shifting that greed for things I didn’t have to gratitude for what I was already so lucky to have.

Once that happened, miracles started flowing: from free business training to an opportunity to get advice from Kris Carr herself (hello crazy happy dance!) and the Universe removing obstacles that weren’t in alignment with my life purpose. However, my most beautiful gift was given to me from a first time client, who brought to me a message of encouragement and determination from my deceased grandpa. It came at the perfect time, in the perfect way and it was exactly what I needed to hear.

At the end of the month, the gratitude was pouring out of my person. I was in awe of what the Universe was capable of and so freaking thankful that it was supporting me in so many ways.

But, some fear started to creep in. My month of gifts is done! What does this mean?! Do I have to hunker down now in case abundance slows down?!

Oh, fear of lack. You sneaky, sneaky devil. Even as I’m writing this, I’m working on rewriting that message in my mind.

It’s important to remember that power animals that request to be with you for the month are with you ALL MONTH. Their lessons and their blessings work 1×1 with you ALL MONTH. But don’t forget to continuously build on what you’ve learned in previous months. It’s one of the reasons I’m offering free mini tarot readings this month: keep that turkey energy flowing!

Here’s the basics for your own use:

Start by researching the meaning, or medicine, behind the power animal. There’s a plethora of information available to you online and in various books. Try Googling “ spiritual meaning”. Get the details on what your animal is all about: the positives, the challenges, and the actions being called for.

It’s also helpful to look at more than one resource when researching your power animal (i.e. different websites and/or books).

Contrary medicine. Most, if not all, animal medicine comes with contrary medicine. In a normal reading, contrary medicine is indicated in a card that is positioned upside down. These messages are oftentimes tough love, as they spotlight aspects of ourselves that we need to work on.

However, in an outlook spread, all aspects of the medicine need to be reflected on; the positives and the challenges.

Which leads nicely into…

How do you apply animal medicine to your life? It’s first important to know what context the animal medicine was given to you.

In the outlook spread that many of you received, the animal medicine applies to the span of the assigned month. I encourage you to research the animal medicine in the beginning of the month so you know where to direct your awareness.

Don’t go looking for things to happen. Instead, let the experiences come to you, live them, and take the time afterwards to reflect (and reflect through the lens of the animal medicine of the month).

Other means of using animal medicine:

When an in-the-flesh animal has flagged down your attention (oftentimes acting against their natural behavior), this is often times a message that is to be immediately applied to your life. Your first thought should always be to go and look up what the meaning of the animal is.

If you’ve been introduced to one or more of your animal totems, apply their medicine big picture. Animal totems give you insight into your own inner workings and desires. They are aligned with who you are as a person, and can be thought of as an extension of you. If you need a refresher about what an animal totem is (versus a power animal), head over HERE.

And finally, for you card readers out there, power animal cards (or animal wisdom cards) can be used in any traditional oracle spread. Just be sure to keep the focus of the spread in mind when researching the meaning behind the animals.

How are your power animals treating you? Do you have insight on how to work with their lessons? Please share below!

When Life Gets You Sick, Get Ready to Soar

(And Embrace Your Dark & Twisty)

What I feel in my bones is this: I want to serve the greatest good, above all else. And part of the greatest good is making sure that I am the best vessel for channeling energy that I am capable of being when working with and treating my clients.

I have always played tug-of-war with the healers complex: the need to take care of everyone else first, before myself, and oftentimes at the expense of myself. This comes in part from an insanely deep desire to help people find their passion in life. But it also comes from a place of finding my happiness through seeing other people happy. And that, my friends, is what gets me into trouble.

So, what’s the purpose in me telling you this?

Since I made a pact with the Universe that I would commit myself fully to this work, so long as It made sure I was only adding real value to people’s lives, my life is unrecognizable. I get to spend the majority of my days helping people make astounding life changes and realize their immense personal power. On top of that, the amount of energy that propels me day-to-day is so beyond anything that my human mind can make sense of.  Seriously, how could I ask for anything more?

Here’s the but, and I’ll be honest. Not too long ago, I started to fear my ability to juggle all these new changes and maintain the high degree of integrity that was nonnegotiable for me in my practice. In other words, insecurities started to poke their sticks at me. But, I kept pushing through. I didn’t want to let the fear get injected into any part of my work, so I buried it within myself, with intentions of never letting it out. The only lingering issue was a frustrating case of writer’s block, something I had never experienced before. I had heard that it was inevitable though, so I let it be.

A couple weeks ago, that propelling energy that normally guides me through the day started to wane, even though I was still seeing it work for my clients. So, because my clients are my priority, I ignored it. As long as my clients were still getting everything they needed, I wasn’t going to take time away from them to figure out why I didn’t’ feel the energy push within myself anymore.

Then I got sick. A touch of a stomach bug, nothing extravagant, but just enough to disrupt my daily flow. While I didn’t take any time to tend to my own energy needs, I did however judge my inability to handle new stresses. And onward I went.

The following week I got a brutal sinus and throat infection that knocked me flat on my gluteus maximus. I’m talking the whole nine yards: fever, body aches, and liquids for days since I couldn’t swallow normal food. I certainly wasn’t serving anyone’s highest good then. That got my attention. Big time.

As I tell most of my clients, when something has manifested physically, your first thought should be questioning where your energy is imbalanced, followed by examining why the imbalance occurred. After taking in the energetic equivalents of my aliments and my own self-reflections, it became abundantly clear that I wasn’t serving everyone’s highest good: my own had been utterly swiped aside.

Here’s what Louise Hay, author of “You Can Heal Your Life” has to say about the energetic ties to stomach and throat issues:

Stomach issues: Fear of the new. Inability to assimilate the new.

Throat issues: The inability to speak up for one’s self. Refusal to change.

See the connection? Que my fears and insecurities about my ability to juggle life and me burying them where no one can see them (myself included).

– My first red flag indicating that wasn’t a wise choice was when I felt my own energy begin to bunker down and not let universal energy flow through me. I ignored it.

– I was given a second red flag when I got a touch of a stomach virus (fear of the new). My response to which was to judge myself and move forward in the same way I had been.

– I was given my third, and final, red flag in the form of a nasty throat virus (refusal to change and stick up for myself, to myself); one that highly recommended I slow down and tend to my needs.

So, I had to get to work on giving my insecurities and fears their time in the spotlight. I had to feel what they were telling me about my weak spots, and love them anyway. I had to work to get to a place where I accepted their existence and appreciated the growth they facilitated for me.

And right on cue, my aliments left just as quickly as they set in.

You see, the Universe always has our back.

Let me reiterate.

The Universe ALWAYS has your back.

Which brings me to morals of this story:

As energy healers, we must recognize how important it is that we include our greatest good when we are tending to everyone else’s. It only clogs up our channel when we ignore our needs. And when we’re energetically backed up, we will not be able to be conduits of effective and total healing. Instead, recognizing and giving ourselves what we need makes us better healers and brings more integrity into our practice. You know, live what you preach and teach by example.

This next part extends to everyone and is the most important part. You ready? Are you sitting down? Here it is: Own your stuff. All of it. Even the dark and twisty. Feel it. And when you’ve fully experienced it, release it. Fall in love with the lessons you learned about yourself, and move on.  There is freedom and liberation in giving yourself permission to experience your feelings and accept them without judging yourself. It’s the beauty in being human in this life: the incredible capacity to FEEL.

Gobs of love and blessings to you, and a little bit extra if you’re seeing your way through the dark and twisty.

And if you need a little extra guidance on what’s underneath your aliments, don’t forgot to sign up to get your free reading this month!

Alignment – Let Babaji Show You How

I have always found it fascinating how well oracle cards clearly illustrate just how connected perfect strangers are. For instance, this month’s free reading is done with Ascended Master oracle cards. I have seen the same Ascended Master pop up at least once for every batch of readings I’ve sat down to do (with a deck that has 44 cards). And, more importantly, showed up for people who have no obvious connection to each other.

This always surprises me! I spend a good deal of time prepping the decks that I use. I shuffle them, I clear them, I shuffle them again while calling in the energy for a reading, then the cards get spread out and scattered around while I close my eyes and pick the card that I’m guided to. And yet, no matter how much preparation I do, identical cards come up.

So, that got me to thinking. Perhaps this happens when the world needs a particular message, and people need to band together.

Following that thought process, I think I’ll give that ascended master I referred to earlier some time in the spot light: Babaji.

Mahavatar Babaji – Kriya Yoga

His Story

He’s known as the “deathless avatar”, an Indian saint, and an extremely important figure in the yoga world. In fact, his name means “revered father”. He’s most well known as the yogi who successfully re-introduced the ancient practice of yoga, called Kriya Yoga, to the world.

Interestingly enough, there are no historical records regarding his death or birth, but his existence is as widely accepted as any other saint. The original literature about Babaji was written by Paramahansa Yogananda (who’s credited with being tasked by Babaji to spread yoga to the western world). Written in his book, it’s said that Babaji is deathless and still resides in the Himalayan regions of India. He is said to physically show himself only to those who are on the highest of spiritual paths.

Babaji – The Ascended Master

Drawing this card suggests the obvious, that you should seriously consider taking up yoga. Or, at the very least, give it a try at least once. As the reader behind the card, I often find that people who receive this card are in need of yoga for one of two reasons: there are challenges to their health that would benefit immensely from yoga, or their spiritual practice needs elevating and yoga is the place to start.

But, there is a deeper meaning behind having Babaji as your ascended master. The way in which yoga was taught by Babaji called for a marriage between science and faith. He desired for participants to understand the physical and the spiritual aspects of various yoga positions with intentions of ushering in total self-transformation for the participant. So, while Babaji asks you to dabble in yoga, he’s also asking you to bring greater awareness to all aspects of your life and find a way to bring those aspects into alignment with each other.

That’s the spiritual translation. What does that mean in real world terms? Why are so many people being guided by Babaji this month?

Real Life Translation

People are STRESSED. So many of us are taking in and holding onto copious amounts of negativity from the media, work, and the people around us. It’s causing serious harm to our physical health and our emotional wellbeing. The vast majority are in desperate need of a reality break.

Yoga provides that outlet. It’s the perfect equation! You get your body moving and stretching, which is going to promote healthy bodily functions. It’s also fantastic for your emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Each pose is designed for you to connect with a specific spiritual outlet (usually nature elements). This
is going to give you the emotional reset you’re craving and the spiritual connection that will lead you to a more fulfilled life. Just as Babaji had intended, you’ll be learning how to fully utilize your physical and spiritual beliefs, together, more effectively in your life.

And for those who feel  you’ve pulled Babaji as your ascended master because you need to enhance your spiritual work or path, you couldn’t find a better teacher. I suggest you meditate with his energy, be open to whatever it is he wants to teach you, and get ready to see the results unfold.

Gobs of love and blessings!

Did you get the Babaji card this month? Leave a comment below with your insights. I promise you, you’ll be helping someone else who shares this energy with you!

The Wild World of Power Animals

We’re going to dabble in some shamanism today and take a peek inside the world of power animals.

Shamans hold the belief that every thing is alive and carries potent wisdom and power. While that extends to just about anything we can see (and a lot that we can’t), the concept of power animals (or totem animals, or animal medicine) is pretty universal among all cultures. This wisdom and power is given to everyone and becoming familiar with these animals can be incredibly empowering to you and your life’s purpose.

We each have animal totems, those animals that have been with us our entire lives and will continue to be with us until our passing. Animal totems give you deep, intimate insights into your inner workings. They tell you what you love, what kind of job you’ll excel in, what you’re love life probably looks like, and what you’re strengths are. Animal totems are said to live inside us, and therefor, are us.

Oftentimes, you’ve seen your animal totems pop up in your life, in very non-mystical ways. For instance, one of my totem animals is a tiger. Growing up I had an obsession with big cats, but my favorite were the tigers.

We also have a connection to power animals, the animals that seek us out to provide us with a message (called animal medicine). Each animal has their own “specialty”, if you will, and their messages are their way of helping you in their specialty. Power animals show up when you need guidance in some area of your life, whether because you asked for it or not.

There are plenty of resource books out there that go through what each animal’s message is, but a quick Google search will provide you with more than enough information to give you what you need. As always, trust the information that resonates with you.

There are many-a-different ways to go about finding out which power animals are working with you, or will be working with you:

  • Have an animal totem reading done. This kind of reading can tell you what animal totems have been with you all your life in addition to which animals are currently working with you (and may not be permanent). For instance, a year outlook animal spread gives you a different power animal for each of the 12 months that will be working with you.
  • An experienced shaman has a direct communication link to the animal realm and can talk with you about which animals are in your life without the use of cards. Many shamans can also perform healings that strengthen your connection to your animal totems.
  • You can also receive animal medicine in your daily life. Pay attention to animals that are acting in opposition to their natural behavior, it’s likely they are trying to get your attention.

One of my favorite memories of power animals showing up for me was during a period of my life when I was doubting my ability to open up to the world about my abilities. I had been beating myself up for days and was at the doorstep of quitting.

While driving one morning, there were 3 crows in my lane, about 100 feet ahead. It was a busy road, right off the freeway, so I assumed they would move any moment. I got closer, and they didn’t. They stared at my car, but didn’t move. So I honked a little, half annoyed that they were in my way, but still no luck. They didn’t budge. Finally, and emotionally, I yelled, “I SEE YOU. I GET IT. JUST MOVE SO I DON’T KILL YOU”. At which point the three leisurely flew away.

Minutes after that, two hawks started flying to my left. I found this odd, provided the area, but not odd enough to consider them “in opposition to their natural behavior”. I only took notice when I realized that the two perched themselves on light poles when I was stopped at red lights, and only continued their flight when I was also moving.

While I won’t get into the individual message associated with the crow and hawk, those two birds gave me the kick in the butt I needed to get out of my funk.

This kind of experience is not exclusive to me, or people who are energy workers. All you have to do is be open. Be aware of your surroundings and present in the moment.

You may be surprised at what you see.

The First Confessional

You heard last time about the initial happenings of the trip. I want to dig into the meat of it. Because it definitely did not go as expected, but did happen exactly as it needed to.

Conjure up an Indian hotel, set in the middle of an exceptionally run down part of the city. My travel buddy and I just got back from an interesting encounter at a nearby mall and are decompressing, preparing to arrive at the University the next day. It was a fairly mellow evening.

The night, however, was a sleepless one. Both of us were plagued by an uneasy feeling in our gut. Although, neither of us shared with the other the experience or that we were both awake most of the night. I get up early, and feel sick to my stomach. It’s debilitating. Something is off. Something is wrong.

I expected nerves, but not dread. I couldn’t even conjure up conversational words. The only thing I could say was that I couldn’t go. I couldn’t go to the University feeling, in my bones, that it wasn’t part of my purpose. I didn’t know why, or what the reactions of people back home were going to be, but I knew that I couldn’t go through with a plan that made me feel that way.

I saw my travel partner struggle with her own inner battles, but she had shared with me at that point that she had been awake with the same dread and had gotten out of bed with that same debilitating feeling that could only make her question attending the University.

Together, we made the decision not to go.

It was an instant feeling of freedom. And instant recognition that this was a decision that we made from our hearts, from a place of authenticity.

We found a new hotel to stay at, and were treated like queens for a week as we experienced the generosity of our host country, experienced the food, and got a taste of Indian culture (more on this next week).

In making new plans, we had planned on leaving India the following week, giving us a little under two weeks to stay and explore. An image of 7 days had passed in my mind’s eye (that mystical eye that you can’t see in between your eyebrows, but will show you all sorts of truths if you let it) during this planning, but I didn’t put much weight into it. Both of us had gotten a cold from the plane, so a little R&R and causal exploration for 10+ days didn’t sound like a bad plan to me in the least. So, we went ahead and rebooked the flights.

On day 6, we found out that the hotel we were staying at couldn’t accommodate our revised plan. We had two options: leave the next day for a different hotel or leave the next day for our next destination. At this point, I was well aware of the connection to the 7 days I had seen just a couple days prior. I say, okay Universe, if we’re supposed to leave tomorrow, you better make sure we can get a flight, with no extra charges. If there’s any charge, I’m not doing it. I’m not ready to leave yet.

I made the phone call to the airline. There was a plane leaving the next day (day 7), no fare change, no change fee. Needless to say, we were on that plane. The same sensation of freedom and recognition filling us up.

I promised at the start of this trip and this blog that I would share all my experiences with you, so you can take the nuggets of insight and plant them into your life. So, here’s the rundown.

This is what I know for sure (so far):

Relationships are everything. And it starts with yourself. I had a full on meltdown (complete with ugly cry and whining) when we made the decision to move on from India. But not because I was disappointed with the decision. In fact, I knew in my heart that it was time to move on. I was terrified of the criticism that I thought I was going to get from those closest to me. I wanted to stick to the original plan for the pure purpose of showing that I would. Never mind that I had already transformed my life back home, travelled for 24 hours, and was sitting in the hotel ready to go. It didn’t occur to me until a few hours later that the only thing I had (and wanted) to live up to was my own heart. The part of me that always knows exactly what I need and want.

And the judgmental commentary did come. But what I’ve come to discover was that the people who genuinely cared for me supported me because they believed in me. They didn’t try to dictate what my next move was or tell me what I was doing was right or wrong. They simply told me to follow my heart unconditionally. And speaking of the importance of relationships, those are the people that I will go to the ends of the earth for. The gratitude I have for them being anchors during that time is something that words cannot adequately explain. Those are the kinds of relationships that should always be nurtured and kept close to the heart, as they are rare and the most valuable gift you will ever receive.

Your inner, burning passion needs to be let loose on the world. Any other course of action is doing the worst kind of disservice to yourself. When you realize what drives you, what makes you excited about waking up and living your life in the morning, you’ll realize that there’s no other way to live. The sense of freedom that you’re filled with when you make decisions based on your own heart’s desires is something that never gets old. You deserve to be happy and you deserve to have all your deepest desires provided to you. And, contrary to popular belief, there is only one thing you have to do: let your passion take the wheel. Make the decision to follow only your own inner compass.

I’ve been caught up, more so in the last couple months, with making sure I keep up with what everyone expects of me in addition to what I expect of myself. If the two were at odds with each other, everyone else’s expectations would win over my own. The funk that it left me in was really challenging. I lost all ambition for the things I wanted and tended to “hermit” inside myself. I fell into the most introverted characteristics of myself to such an extreme that it was really self-protection at its worst. I lost my love for life and lost the connection to the passion I feel for doing energetic/spiritual work.

So, although the plot twists in India were emotional, it brought me back to making decisions from my heart. It brought back that feeling of waking up and knowing that I am the author of my life, and I can make of it whatever I want. I can choose to let expectations that aren’t my own steer the course of my days or I can choose to live my truth and let my passions blaze the trail.

Authenticity feels really good! Turns out, I really like my authentic self. I make decisions that I don’t regret, and my life always improves when I’m operating from my heart. And as soon as you have that inner peace with yourself, external opinions carry no weight.

Living in the moment is everything it’s cracked up to be. There’s been a lot of attention on this in the recent past. I always thought of it as hippie love nonsense and totally unpractical. But, it really is the red carpet to happiness in all parts of your life. It also would have saved me a whole lot of stress if I had taken this trip moment by moment (or even day by day), instead of reverting to my control freak tendencies and needing every part of this trip planned out. Which brings me to my last point…

The Universe (or God, Divine), is always, always working with you. I was angry, for a lengthy hot minute, that I was being led outside of India. I had devoted much of my time and planning to being in India, at the Oneness University, for the month of October. And then you’re telling me, after I travelled for 24 hours and ran through airports, that it’s in my best interest to stay only for a week then move on to elsewhere?! Are you kidding me?! What a bunch of bullies. That would require money! Stress! Disappointing others! I was so upset at this point that I was ready to throw in the towel. I wanted nothing to do with spiritual guidance and certainly nothing more to do with the trip.

I’ll tell you what though. The only stress I had was the stress I created myself. The practical portion of rearranging the trip was so seamless that, after I calmed down, I realized there was no real reason to be upset. I still got to experience India and I’m being called to move on to other exciting parts of the world. I’ve always wanted to travel the world, and now I was being given the opportunity to do so. So, what, exactly did I have to be upset about? And, this part is important, why would I ever think that divine guidance was working against me? I was getting a deep desire handed to me on a silver platter.

It really came back to meeting the expectations of those back home. To which I refer you back to every other point made on this list.

In light of bursting at the seams with gratitude for the people in my life, I want to take a moment to thank the individuals who supported me through the India experience:

First and foremost, Brandi, for making this trip with me and sticking through all its twists and turns. There is no one else I’d rather be experiencing this with. I wake up every day grateful to be in this with you.

Travis, the love of my life, for always helping me find my center and be true to myself. And for making it out of Florida alive. I’m really happy about that too.

My father, for encouraging me to always follow my own inner compass and having just the right thing to say.

Deb, for reminding me that the Angels are always supporting me and looking out for me.

And Katie, for being that person in my life I can send pictures of Wayne Dyer’s doppelgänger.

I want to hear about how you experience these truth nuggets in your life! Spread your passion and you never know who it will inspire!

How To: Create A Meditation Space

We’re all hearing about it these days, that pesky ‘M’ word: Meditation. We should be doing it every day, for X hours, to achieve those really fantastically magical results.

While I’m a huge proponent of meditation (although it did take me a bit to find my meditation mojo), there isn’t a lot of clear guidance on where you should meditate. And while you can meditate anywhere, setting up a dedicated space can amplify your meditations immensely.

It takes about an hour (depending on how big a space you are dedicating) and a few items:

  • Cleaning supplies
  • A shelf or small table to serve as your altar
  • One sage stick and lighter
  • A ceramic plate/bowl or alabaster shell
  • At least one item that is meaningful to you
  • Rose water (optional)

  1. Find a space. You’re going need to find a place in your home that you can make your own. It’s a bonus if it’s also a place where you can sit without an overabundance of noise. This could mean a small space in front of a shelf in your bedroom or your entire spare room. A gigantic space is not required. Remember, this is all about getting some serious you time. It’ll be easier to spend time there if you actually like the space.
  1. Clean! You’ll want to clean the space as thoroughly as possible. Energetically speaking, energy moves more freely in clean, organized spaces and becomes stagnant in unkempt areas. Ideally, you want to start by moving everything out of the space and cleaning from floor to ceiling. I will always suggest using natural cleaning products. Lemon essential oil sprinkled on a damp rag is my go-to. If that’s not realistic, aim to remove anything that doesn’t need to be in the area and be sure the remaining items are organized. You’ll also want to limit the electronics present in the room, or eliminate them from the space all together. Electronics interfere with our energy and the energy around us. It’s best to limit that as much as possible when we’re meditating. Clean the floors (or vacuum), wash the windows, and dust whatever needs dusting. I always find it helpful to put on my favorite playlist at this point. Cleaning gets done so much faster when I’m shaking my booty! Make sure all the furniture being used gets a good rub down too. If you want to go all out, get some rose water and wipe your alter down with it. Rose water promotes only the best kinds of energy.
  1. Smudge. There’s a variety of different methods out there for smudging. Keeping it simple, you’ll need a stick of sage, a ceramic plate (or alabaster shell), and fire source. The smoke produced by the smudge will IMG_0810be used to clear any negative energy that is in the space, so you can start with a clean slate. Light the sage and keep it over your plate or shell (as the leaves burn, embers will be falling). Cover the area as best you can with the smoke, including the walls and corners. It’s important here to focus on a clear intention. This could mean praying, repeating mantras, or simply a repeated statement. I like to use the following mantra:

“I clear this space of all that is negative and anything that doesn’t serve me or those that reside in this space. This space will only be filled with love and light.”

If you want to take it a step further, work in a counterclockwise motion around the room and end at an open window if possible. For those unfamiliar with smudging, be prepared for a…unique…scent. It will produce a lot of smoke, so start with sage leaves (just break them off the stick) until you become comfortable with the amount and smell of the smoke.
  1. Set up your sacred items. This is the point where you start setting up your shelf or small table that will serve as your altar with items that are meaningful to you. This can literally be anything: crystals, photographs, feathers, crosses, jewelry, a spatula. The only requirement is that it holds significance to you. If only one thing comes to mind at this point, peachy! If 100 things come to mind here, great, just make sure your altar is big enough! I also like to use a pretty scarf to drape over my altar before setting up my items.
If these items need to be cleaned, be sure to do so now. It’s also ideal to smudge them. Just cover the item in the sage smoke for a couple of seconds.

It’s important that, while you are placing your item(s) on your altar, you’re in a place of calm. You want to be sure positive intention goes into creating this space. This could mean taking a couple of deep breaths, a moment of self-reflection, or a short meditation to ground yourself.

  1. Invite. This is the really important part. This space is dedicated to your beliefs. Therefore, invite anything into the space that you hold sacred: Angels, God, Buddha, spirit guides, animal totems, Genesha. Whoever your soul feels connected to, ask them to be in the space, protect it, and fill it with all their good juju (or light, vibration, holiness, for more technical word choices).

That’s it! The space is ready to mediate in. Because I dedicate a room for mediation and energy work, I like to decorate as well. Just be sure to smudge any new items that you bring into the space to ensure they are only providing you with the best kind of energy.
