Harness the Power of Animal Medicine

In January, I gave many of you a 2017 outlook spread: one power animal for each month.

I’ve received a lot of questions about how to decipher meanings and how to apply them to your life. Now that we’re in March, I’d like to take some time to talk about how to use those animals and their “medicine” to better your life.

Let me start with an example:

My February animal medicine was the Turkey: Give-Away

Turkey is simultaneously both an indication of gifts headed your way and a reminder that all energy, and abundance, should move through you. Translation? Get ready for some exceptional gifts, but don’t get greedy. Be generous as generosity comes to you and reign in any fears of lack.

Naturally, there was some excitement when I looked into this medicine at the beginning of the month. Gifts?! From Spirit?! Yes please! Gimme gimme!

And there was my very first lesson, on February 1st: don’t get greedy! I had to get to work right away on shifting that greed for things I didn’t have to gratitude for what I was already so lucky to have.

Once that happened, miracles started flowing: from free business training to an opportunity to get advice from Kris Carr herself (hello crazy happy dance!) and the Universe removing obstacles that weren’t in alignment with my life purpose. However, my most beautiful gift was given to me from a first time client, who brought to me a message of encouragement and determination from my deceased grandpa. It came at the perfect time, in the perfect way and it was exactly what I needed to hear.

At the end of the month, the gratitude was pouring out of my person. I was in awe of what the Universe was capable of and so freaking thankful that it was supporting me in so many ways.

But, some fear started to creep in. My month of gifts is done! What does this mean?! Do I have to hunker down now in case abundance slows down?!

Oh, fear of lack. You sneaky, sneaky devil. Even as I’m writing this, I’m working on rewriting that message in my mind.

It’s important to remember that power animals that request to be with you for the month are with you ALL MONTH. Their lessons and their blessings work 1×1 with you ALL MONTH. But don’t forget to continuously build on what you’ve learned in previous months. It’s one of the reasons I’m offering free mini tarot readings this month: keep that turkey energy flowing!

Here’s the basics for your own use:

Start by researching the meaning, or medicine, behind the power animal. There’s a plethora of information available to you online and in various books. Try Googling “ spiritual meaning”. Get the details on what your animal is all about: the positives, the challenges, and the actions being called for.

It’s also helpful to look at more than one resource when researching your power animal (i.e. different websites and/or books).

Contrary medicine. Most, if not all, animal medicine comes with contrary medicine. In a normal reading, contrary medicine is indicated in a card that is positioned upside down. These messages are oftentimes tough love, as they spotlight aspects of ourselves that we need to work on.

However, in an outlook spread, all aspects of the medicine need to be reflected on; the positives and the challenges.

Which leads nicely into…

How do you apply animal medicine to your life? It’s first important to know what context the animal medicine was given to you.

In the outlook spread that many of you received, the animal medicine applies to the span of the assigned month. I encourage you to research the animal medicine in the beginning of the month so you know where to direct your awareness.

Don’t go looking for things to happen. Instead, let the experiences come to you, live them, and take the time afterwards to reflect (and reflect through the lens of the animal medicine of the month).

Other means of using animal medicine:

When an in-the-flesh animal has flagged down your attention (oftentimes acting against their natural behavior), this is often times a message that is to be immediately applied to your life. Your first thought should always be to go and look up what the meaning of the animal is.

If you’ve been introduced to one or more of your animal totems, apply their medicine big picture. Animal totems give you insight into your own inner workings and desires. They are aligned with who you are as a person, and can be thought of as an extension of you. If you need a refresher about what an animal totem is (versus a power animal), head over HERE.

And finally, for you card readers out there, power animal cards (or animal wisdom cards) can be used in any traditional oracle spread. Just be sure to keep the focus of the spread in mind when researching the meaning behind the animals.

The Wild World of Power Animals

We’re going to dabble in some shamanism today and take a peek inside the world of power animals.

Shamans hold the belief that every thing is alive and carries potent wisdom and power. While that extends to just about anything we can see (and a lot that we can’t), the concept of power animals (or totem animals, or animal medicine) is pretty universal among all cultures. This wisdom and power is given to everyone and becoming familiar with these animals can be incredibly empowering to you and your life’s purpose.

We each have animal totems, those animals that have been with us our entire lives and will continue to be with us until our passing. Animal totems give you deep, intimate insights into your inner workings. They tell you what you love, what kind of job you’ll excel in, what you’re love life probably looks like, and what you’re strengths are. Animal totems are said to live inside us, and therefor, are us.

Oftentimes, you’ve seen your animal totems pop up in your life, in very non-mystical ways. For instance, one of my totem animals is a tiger. Growing up I had an obsession with big cats, but my favorite were the tigers.

We also have a connection to power animals, the animals that seek us out to provide us with a message (called animal medicine). Each animal has their own “specialty”, if you will, and their messages are their way of helping you in their specialty. Power animals show up when you need guidance in some area of your life, whether because you asked for it or not.

There are plenty of resource books out there that go through what each animal’s message is, but a quick Google search will provide you with more than enough information to give you what you need. As always, trust the information that resonates with you.

There are many-a-different ways to go about finding out which power animals are working with you, or will be working with you:

  • Have an animal totem reading done. This kind of reading can tell you what animal totems have been with you all your life in addition to which animals are currently working with you (and may not be permanent). For instance, a year outlook animal spread gives you a different power animal for each of the 12 months that will be working with you.
  • An experienced shaman has a direct communication link to the animal realm and can talk with you about which animals are in your life without the use of cards. Many shamans can also perform healings that strengthen your connection to your animal totems.
  • You can also receive animal medicine in your daily life. Pay attention to animals that are acting in opposition to their natural behavior, it’s likely they are trying to get your attention.

One of my favorite memories of power animals showing up for me was during a period of my life when I was doubting my ability to open up to the world about my abilities. I had been beating myself up for days and was at the doorstep of quitting.

While driving one morning, there were 3 crows in my lane, about 100 feet ahead. It was a busy road, right off the freeway, so I assumed they would move any moment. I got closer, and they didn’t. They stared at my car, but didn’t move. So I honked a little, half annoyed that they were in my way, but still no luck. They didn’t budge. Finally, and emotionally, I yelled, “I SEE YOU. I GET IT. JUST MOVE SO I DON’T KILL YOU”. At which point the three leisurely flew away.

Minutes after that, two hawks started flying to my left. I found this odd, provided the area, but not odd enough to consider them “in opposition to their natural behavior”. I only took notice when I realized that the two perched themselves on light poles when I was stopped at red lights, and only continued their flight when I was also moving.

While I won’t get into the individual message associated with the crow and hawk, those two birds gave me the kick in the butt I needed to get out of my funk.

This kind of experience is not exclusive to me, or people who are energy workers. All you have to do is be open. Be aware of your surroundings and present in the moment.

You may be surprised at what you see.

Easy Intro to Reiki

Allow to me to introduce to you the best kept secret in the U.S. – Reiki.

“A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.” -Definition by Barefoot Wellness

I’ll be the first to tell you that I avoided reiki like the plague for months after it was first mentioned to me by my acupuncturist. My attitude? I wasn’t going to hand over my well-earned cash to have someone put their hands on me in order to “heal my energy”. Having a pre-med background, I couldn’t bring myself to buy into it.

I held onto my anti-reiki stance so strongly, that I needed an energetic smack to reset my beliefs and biases. While I was in Sedona Arizona, I had been given a Wisdom Card reading, pulling the cedar card. The message behind the card wasn’t particularly meaningful to me, but hindsight turned out to be 20/20.

When I got back home, I was giving my acupuncturist the low down on my trip. She insisted that now was the time to get a reiki treatment. Try it once, she had said. Something about my reaction must have been different, because she handed me the practitioner’s card: Cedar Circle Healing.

Well. Damn. All signs pointed to reiki.

I went to the first appointment with sweaty palms and a nasty case of word vomit. I was talking to the practitioner about various experiences I had while adding in little jibs that I wasn’t sure I bought into reiki. I was open to the experience, but had some serious doubts about it being effective.

Strange sensations came and went through the whole treatment. Unless she grew an extra set of arms, I could have sworn someone else was in the room, holding my ankles while she had both her hands on my shoulders. And why did the room get so bright? Did she open the blinds? I hadn’t heard her do so. I convinced myself that I  had fallen asleep.

Experiences like these happened with almost every treatment.

But, the real value was in the life changes. I was able to meditate successfully for the first time. I had always struggled with shutting my mind off to all my to-do lists, you know, those things that I thought I should have been doing instead of meditating. I started feeling less tired and more motivated. The habits that weren’t all that good for me came to light. I was able, for the first time, to start thinking about what I wanted from my life, independent from what others wanted from me.

As such, reiki changed my life and set the course for the coming year.

I want you to have your own experience with reiki. So, let me take some of the mysticism out of it and give you the facts.

  • Reiki is performed by an “attuned” practitioner who will gently place their hands on various sections of your body or hover just above. It can therefore be performed hands on, or touch free.
  • You may be asked to lay on either your back or your belly.
  • Additional tools may be used, such as crystals and singing bowls.
  • Reiki focuses on healing your energy field by infusing it with reiki energy, a very pure form of energy. You could also call it “life force energy”.
  • Reiki is most often an incredibly relaxing experience. Some people even fall asleep.
  • You may also experience new and interesting sensations: feeling an extra set of healing hands that don’t belong to the practitioner, seeing all sorts of colors while your eyes are closed, and feeling heat or cold under the practitioner’s hands. These are just a few as the possibilities are endless.
  • There can be a “detox” of sorts experienced after a treatment. This can be emotional or physical. Reiki energy continues to work outside of the treatment room and manifests in countless different ways, working with you to improve your life.

As for practitioner training, it’s a blended process. At its most traditional, it’s part classroom, part treatment instruction, and part attunement for each of the three levels of certification. Originally, it took years for an individual to reach the third level, often referred to as a master reiki practitioner. Now, and more so in the U.S., reiki training has been heavily modified. Some programs claim to train an individual to master level in one weekend. Others, entirely online.

Reiki has been studied, tested, and measured, but it’s beliefs and training are rooted in spirituality and personal growth. Reiki practitioners should be spending time to heal themselves spiritually, mentally, and physically before ever treating a client. In fact, the first certification (called an attunement) was intended purely for the purpose of healing the individual, not a client.

Which brings me to my next nugget: take the time to look at all of your options when choosing a reiki practitioner. You’ll want to take into account their years of experience, certification/attunement level, and how they were trained, but, most importantly, go to who resonates with you. Read their bio and talk with them. Choose the person that you’re drawn to. Our “gut feelings” are our best inner compass.

I’ll leave you with Mr. Einstein who elegantly stated, in a single sentence, the reason why reiki works:

“Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it.”
-Albert Einstein

The Crystal Stress-Fix

We’ve all had those days. You know, the ones where your stress level is big enough to fit in a whole bottle of wine (or pint of ice cream), your to-do list keeps getting bigger rather than smaller, your boss continues to hound you about deadlines, and all you want to do is curl into a ball and let the magic stress fairies take it all away.

While I’m still searching for the existence of magic stress fairies, one of the easiest ways to get started in protecting your personal energy is crystals. They’re easy to use and inexpensive.

For those with an office, put some next to your computer.

Struggling with people? Find yourself a crystal bracelet or necklace. Or, make it really easy, and just stick them in your pocket before you leave home.

The protocol is really simple. Just wear or hold your chosen crystal to help the stress level. That’s it.

Crystals can often help immediately, if held, but are always most effective if worn consistently. For instances, I always have my clear quartz on my person (ladies, this is when bras come in handy). If I know I’m going to have a particularly trying day, I may tuck a small amethyst next to my clear quartz or slip on a hematite bracelet. It’s all about experimenting with which crystals work for you. This short list has my top defensive players.

Clear Quartz – The Master Healer

Clear Quartz It would take less words to tell you what this crystal can’t do for you. To start, it improves the energy movement in your body, and as such, brings you into balance. The quartz likes to target it’s superior healing on your circulatory system, immune system, and on all of your chakras. It helps you to concentrate and can even help with headaches.

However, we’re tackling stress today. Clear quartz repels negativity. That’s right, this crystal super hero works to keep all that bad juju from your lunch meeting from causing you stress. And while it’s keeping all that crabby away from you, it’s helping you to be more positive. Thoughts become more clear and pave the way for you to be more productive.

Energetically, it strengthens your connection between the physical and the spiritual, helping you become more aware and grounded.

Bonus: Clear quartz is also an amplifier. This means a couple things. It will help increase the effectiveness of other crystals, and will also help those feel good feelings be more consistent. Couple the clear quartz with any of the crystals below to enhance their properties.

Lepidolite – Clam, Balance, and Trust

This little sweetheart wraps you up in a giant, warm spiritual hug. It engenders self-love, self-acceLepidoliteptance, and optimism while lending you some extra patience to get you through your day. It works best with emotional struggles such as stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, anger, and panic attacks.

As an extra perk, it’s said to attract success in your career. And in addition to wearing it, you also have the option to put it under your pillow to help quiet your mind so you can get a good night’s snooze.

Moon Quartz – New Beginnings

Moon QuartzI can’t contain the amount of love I have for these beauties! Moon quartz is all about inner strength and growth. It soothes emotional turmoil, including stress, to give you a deep sense of serenity. Because of this, it’s said to guide you to emotional mastery (yes please!). Moon quartz will also bring inspiration your way, and, help strengthen your intuition.

This is also the perfect stone for women as it supports the female reproductive system, promotes fertility, and has strong connections to the feminine energies.

Amethyst – The Gem of Fire

Amethyst is on double duty, both soothing your emotional turmoil and awakening your passions. IAmethystt’s going to protect you from all sorts of detrimental energy: emotionally, electromagnetically (hello corporate workers!), psychically, and
even negative intentions from others.

Amethyst also loves to partner with your mind; it’s said to “sober” your mind and wipe out any lingering negativity, balancing your mood and emotions. And while amethyst is cleansing your mind, your ambition has the chance to rise through the roof, leading you straight to the things that make you happy and fulfilled.

A note on meditating with this crystal: I find that it does two things very effectively. It keeps my meditation room clear of any negative energy, keeping it a safe space, and amplifies my meditations immeasurably. My mind quiets easily, making recovery from a stressful day a pleasurable experience.

Hematite – Protection and HematiteMind

You can consider this stone as your knight in a crystal. It’s most well-known for it’s heavy duty protection capabilities. It’s going to absorb any negativity around you, whether that be from a person or from your surroundings, and will even crack (literally!) when it’s absorbed massive amounts of negativity.

Less well-known is hematite’s supportive effects on your mind. It promotes more productive thoughts, self-esteem, willpower, concentration, and courage.
